Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) Side Effects (& Why They Occur) | Paroxetine, Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) are medications used to treat disorders of depression, anxiety and fibromyalgia. These medications inhibit the reuptake of serotonin back into the presynaptic neuron, leading to increased levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. SSRIs can lead to particular side effects, from their normal use and may also cause antidepressant discontinuation syndrome and serotonin syndrome. In this lesson, we discuss these side effects along with the symptoms of antidepressant discontinuation syndrome and serotonin syndrome.

  1. I was on fluoxetine for over 6 years without any side effects, then i came off it for 6 months ,I then had to go back on it ,but it started to cause a stuffy blocked nose and ear and head pressure which then resulted in pain in and around the eye ,has anyone heard of this and has this happened to anyone else?

  2. Zoloft was prescribed more frequently than any other antidepressant in the USA in 2018 with over 38 million prescriptions.

  3. Any One in the state of not even showering and not able to take care of them selfs ?..i dont even live my house 😞 for sure by miself wont BE able to get better but Im afraid of taking medications. 4. my psychiatrist gave me sertraline and i can’t talk about how effective it was because i was on it for only a few weeks, but it made me start getting tremors. i still get them to this day even though i stopped taking sertraline an entire year ago, though it happens way less often now than around that time last year. i told my psychiatrist about the tremors and she told me it wasn’t the medication (even though it began once i started taking them??) and it was my own fault. she wouldn’t accept or admit that it was a side effect. thankfully i don’t have her as my psychiatrist anymore, and i’m glad to see tremors mentioned in this video as a possible side effect because i knew i wasn’t wrong

  5. Check out Dr. Robert Morse’s channel and the raw vegan community. Apparently depression and a lot of human health issues are caused from the human’s past consumption of foods that are inharmonious in the human body (animal products, grains & beans, and cooked foods). The human diet has only gotten worse , creating an even more acidic condition in the body’s lymphatic system. Every animal in nature eats its food in its raw state. We have an anatomy that closely resembles a frugivore.

  6. My friend was put on Paxil to deal with complicated grief after her Mom died. She was previously a mentally healthy girl. She decided to discontinue her medication a couple of years later and became suicidal and impulsive. She drove her car over a cliff. Luckily, she survived. She is now on Paxil for life. Love therapy and time was probably a better idea than pills.

  7. anyone else (men) have delayed ejaculation issues after taking this? if soo did this side effect go away after a few weeks or is it a permanant effect? thankyou

  8. SSRI really healthy, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT… scientists don't even know how they work… do they ? maybe by damaging the brain after 4 weeks enough to turn people into emotionless zombies

  9. For the last 5 years I’ve been having all kinds of gut issues. Constipation mostly. Ive tried every diet in the books. Doc visits etc. they just say IBS. One thing I’ve recently thinking is I’ve been on sertraline for 10+ years. Anyone else experience this?

  10. Thank god the world is starting to understand that making lazy videos that just list side effects the same as Wikipedia with no other substance to the video is negligent. Videos like this hurt far more people than they’ll ever help. Don’t do your pharmaceutical research on YouTube, can.

  11. New study just came out basically debunking the ‘chemical imbalance’ theory and showing that low levels of serotonin don’t necessarily correlate with depression. Glad I got off them years ago! Turns out it was situational depression, and my thyroid all along (diagnosed with hypothyroidism)

  12. It's depressing just knowing you are likely going to get these awful side effects just taking a pill for depression in the first place. This makes no sense at all.
